How to Capture Notes in Obsidian from iPhone: 6 Ways
Choose a capture route for the situation
Writing a long note and saving a passing thought are different tasks. Opening a vault and choosing a note may suit the first; a preconfigured destination may suit the second. The six approaches below include two different Shortcut routes, which have different setup and app-opening behavior.
Method 1: Type directly in Obsidian mobile
Open your vault in the official app and write. This is a useful starting point for linking, tagging, and editing longer notes. Obsidian is free for personal and commercial use; Sync and Publish are optional paid services. Your capture time depends on the vault, device, and navigation you need.
Method 2: Shortcuts — built-in Capture actions or an Obsidian URI
2a. Obsidian's built-in Capture actions
Since Obsidian 1.11 for mobile, Capture shortcuts can append or prepend text to a note without opening the Obsidian app. Select an Obsidian Capture action in Shortcuts, configure its destination, and try it with a short test line. This is an option to check before building a URI-based workflow.
2b. Shortcuts with obsidian://new
The Obsidian URI protocol can create a note or append to an existing one. It is a separate route that invokes Obsidian through a URL: configure the vault, file, content, and append behavior, and encode parameter values correctly. Method 3: Write a Markdown file into an accessible vault folder
An Obsidian vault contains Markdown files. A file action or compatible editor can create or append a .md file in a vault folder accessible on your iPhone, such as an iCloud Drive folder. Folder access and local file availability matter: a cloud-only file may need to download first. Check that your test note appears in the intended vault.
Method 4: Capture in Drafts, then choose an action
Drafts lets you write first and route the text later. Its actions guide includes built-in and installable actions; you do not have to build every action from scratch. Method 5: SimpleMemo — an email copy plus direct vault append
SimpleMemo (Simple Memo - for Obsidian) can send a memo to your email and append it with a timestamp to a configured Inbox note or daily note. The vault append is a separate local operation: it does not wait for an email to arrive or require a mail-import plugin.
- Open the capture screen, write or dictate, then send. The published 0.4-second figure measures warm launch to input readiness, not time to email delivery or a saved vault note. See the August 11 measurement conditions.
- Folder-direct mode needs a vault folder selected on the iPhone and a locally accessible target. If direct access is unavailable, the URI fallback has different behavior.
- The local append can work offline; email stays queued until a connection is available. Obsidian-only mode saves without emailing. The Free plan allows up to 3 sends per day.

Method 6: Capture with SimpleMemo on Apple Watch
When your iPhone is in your pocket, dictate on the Watch and confirm the memo. Vault append uses the paired iPhone and its configured destination; it is not a direct write into a vault stored on the Watch. Email delivery needs connectivity. Is the Obsidian mobile app free?
Yes. Obsidian is free for personal and commercial use. Sync and Publish are optional paid services. Local note editing does not require a Sync subscription.
Do I need plugins for iPhone capture?
Obsidian's built-in Capture actions, basic obsidian://new links, and SimpleMemo's direct vault append do not require a community plugin. Daily-note workflows may require the built-in Daily Notes plugin to be enabled. Third-party actions depend on their own setup.

Can I capture offline?
Obsidian can edit locally available notes offline. Cloud file downloads, device sync, URI fallback, and Watch delivery have separate requirements.
